Gambling Addiction on the Rise: The NHS Calls for Action

(Originally posted January 2025)

A sharp rise in gambling addiction has left NHS services grappling with the consequences of an industry that continues to profit at the expense of public health.

Over 1,914 patients have been referred to NHS gambling addiction clinics in the past six months, more than double the 836 referrals during the same period last year. Young men, particularly those drawn to online sports betting, dominate the clinics. Many arrive at a breaking point, burdened by massive debts and struggling with mental health issues.

The NHS has nearly doubled its network of specialist gambling clinics, now numbering 15 across the UK. These clinics provide critical support, including therapy, medical treatments, and peer support for recovery. In some cases, patients receive medications typically used for heroin addiction to curb their cravings to gamble.

The UK gambling industry generates £15 billion annually, with 24/7 online betting and “in-play” sports betting contributing to a significant rise in problem gambling. A recent government announcement confirmed a statutory levy on gambling profits, with funds directed to NHS treatment, research, and prevention efforts.

While industry representatives highlight voluntary contributions of £170 million over the past four years, critics argue that more must be done to address the harms caused by predatory practices.

If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling addiction:

  • Self-refer to an NHS gambling clinic or speak to your GP.
  • Explore resources such as GamCare or the National Gambling Helpline.

As the NHS works tirelessly to expand access to treatment, it’s clear that addressing gambling addiction requires a multi-faceted approach. Improved regulation, industry accountability, and public awareness are essential to tackling this growing crisis.

Let’s ensure that no one faces this struggle alone. If you’re worried about gambling’s impact on your life, reach out for help—support is available.
